A new phase for transparency in fashion
As of 1 October 2025, France’s new Eco-Score for textiles has officially entered its voluntary phase. By October 2026, however, this will effectively become mandatory.
If brands do not submit their own Eco-Scores, third parties will be authorised to assign scores to products sold in France, without the brand’s input or approval.
In other words, staying silent today means losing control of how your brand’s environmental impact is represented tomorrow.
What is the French Eco-Score?
The French Eco-Score (Coût Environnemental) is a product-level life cycle assessment (LCA) designed to make the environmental impact of textiles visible and comparable for consumers. It is part of France’s wider AGEC (Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy) and Climate & Resilience laws.
Key details:
- Applies to garments containing 80% or more textile material
- Based on 16 environmental indicators, covering factors such as climate impact, water use, and resource depletion
- Aims to embed transparency and enable fair product comparisons within the textile sector
Timeline
- October 2025: Brands can voluntarily calculate and publish their Eco-Scores.
- October 2026: The system becomes de facto mandatory. Third parties may assign Eco-Scores if brands have not done so themselves.
The French government’s long-term goal is to make environmental labelling a standard consumer right, beginning with textiles and later extending to other product categories.
